When You Do Not Feel Like Yourself Anymore

Updated: May 25

A woman with her hands clasped, head bowed, representing the quiet feeling of not feeling like yourself anymore — a letter from the Stress Less Era for women over 40.

When you do not feel like yourself, it’s easy to wonder what changed

I've been thinking about you.

Not you specifically — I don't know you yet. But I've been thinking about the woman who's been quietly noticing that something feels different lately and hasn't quite said it out loud to anyone.

Maybe she hasn't said it because she can't find the right words for it. It's not dramatic enough to explain. It's not one clear thing she can point to. It's more like a quiet drift — away from the version of herself she's most comfortable being.

Her energy feels different. Her patience is shorter than it used to be. Things that didn't used to bother her feel heavier now. Her body feels less familiar — clothes fitting differently, her skin looking different, or just a general sense of not quite being at home in herself the way she once was.

And because none of it feels big enough on its own, she keeps telling herself it's probably nothing. Maybe she's just tired. Maybe it's a phase. Maybe this is just how things are now.

I want to write to her today because I don't think this gets talked about enough — not in a way that actually feels normal. Not in a way that makes you feel like you're allowed to take it seriously without having something dramatic to show for it.

So if that's you — if you've been noticing that things feel a little off lately, when you do not feel like yourself anymore, in ways that are hard to explain but easy to feel — I want you to know you're not imagining it.

What you're feeling is real. And it usually means something.

In my experience — both personally and in the work I do with women — this kind of quiet drift rarely comes out of nowhere. When the body has been carrying more than it was meant to carry for a while, it doesn't always send dramatic signals. It sends quiet ones first. Subtle shifts that are easy to brush off. Small things that build slowly into something you can't quite ignore anymore, even if you can't fully explain it.

That's not weakness. That's your body doing exactly what it's designed to do — sending signals before things get louder.

The hard part is learning to hear them.

That's what the Stress Less Era is really about. Not fixing everything at once. Not overhauling your life. Just learning to read what your body has been trying to tell you — and responding with something simple and consistent that helps it feel steadier.

I started writing these letters because I wanted a quieter place for this kind of conversation. The kind that doesn't fit neatly into a post or a caption. The kind where I can just think out loud about what I'm seeing and what I'm learning — and where you can write back if something lands for you.

Because I genuinely want to hear from you.

If something in this letter felt familiar — if you found yourself nodding at any of it — you're welcome to reply and tell me what's been going on for you. I read every response. I write back. You don't have to have it figured out to reach out.

And if you'd like to keep receiving letters like this one — along with the conversations, resources, and quiet community that come with them — you can subscribe below. No noise. Just letters, when I have something worth saying.

One more thing before I go.

If you've been feeling off and you want to understand a little more about what might be behind it — I have a short quiz that helps identify your stress type and what your body's signals might be pointing to. It takes about two minutes and it often names things women have been feeling for years without a framework for them.

You can find it at the link below. No pressure. Just an option if you're ready to go a little deeper.

Until next time —

This is part of the Letters from the Stress Less Era series — where I write about the real patterns I see in women around stress, hormones, energy, sleep, skin, and what happens when the body has been carrying too much for too long.
