When Everything Starts to Feel Like Too Much

When everything starts to feel like too much, stress may be affecting more than you realize

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how differently the body responds to stress after carrying too much for too long.

Somewhere along the way, things that used to feel manageable start to feel heavier than they once did, like ankle weights you never get to take off.

Small inconveniences feel bigger and more distracting. Noise feels louder. Simple decisions feel more exhausting than they should. Even ordinary responsibilities, like loading the dishwasher, can start to feel like they take more energy than they once did.

And because there usually isn’t one obvious reason for it, it’s easy to brush it off. Maybe you just need a weekend off. Maybe you’re stretched too thin. Maybe you’re simply tired.

But what I keep coming back to is how quietly this kind of stress tends to build.

Not all at once. Not in some dramatic, obvious way. More like a slow shift in how your body responds to everyday life. Patience feels shorter. Recovery takes longer. It becomes harder to move from one thing to another mentally. Sometimes it can even feel like your system never fully settles, even during moments that are supposed to feel restful.

Not dramatic. Just… heavier.

And I think that’s the part that can feel difficult to explain to other people. From the outside, life may not look all that different. But internally, everything starts requiring a little more energy than it used to.

It’s not that you’ve changed into a different person overnight. Actually, it usually happens so gradually you barely notice it at first. You're still you ... but different. You realize everything starts to feel like too much, even things that never used to bother you before. And the wild thing is you felt the accumulation, but chose to ignore it.

I don’t think this gets talked about enough in normal, everyday language. Especially the part where stress doesn’t always announce itself loudly. No. Stress is sneaky. All the ways you carry it sometimes slowly changes the way you are able to experience ordinary life.

So if things have been feeling heavier lately in ways that are difficult to explain but easy to feel, you’re not imagining it.

If you prefer a quieter space for conversations like this, I’ve been sharing more inside Inside the Stress Less Era.
